The house is situated at No 11 Menston Road, Westville and we are able to offer five days a week Rehabilitation and Occupational Activity Programme.
Lives are changed in an instant with an acquired brain injury. Sadly, these injuries have an impact on both the survivor and their families and caregivers. From leading full and vibrant lives, survivors of a stroke or accident are faced with a long road to rehabilitation and recovery. And their caring families have to learn to cope with the impairment of mental faculties, paralysis and loss of speech in their loved ones. Headway Natal offers a range of unique services in the form of therapies and counselling to help survivors and their families best deal with the disruption to their lives. Our services are available to individuals over the age of 18 who have sustained an acquired brain injury. We will then invite you to visit Headway House where you can view our facilities, meet our staff and attendees, and show you the resources we have available. From this visit, we’ll be able to help you make decisions on the way forward. Our therapists will then introduce your loved one into a series of screenings and assessments to advise on the best course of action. Information and literature is available throughout this entire process. We will make counselling available for the family since they too have suffered much trauma. In 1979 in the UK, a gentleman named Sir Neville Butterworth placed an advertisement in a national daily newspaper asking for holiday accommodation for his brain-injured son. Together they set out to discover what resources existed in the UK for the survivors of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) once they had left hospital. They found only two clubs in the whole of the British Isles! Since its inception, Headway has become an international association with centres in various parts of the world, including South Africa which has four centres. In 1998, a house was purchased in Westville and a centre established to provide rehabilitation for brain injury and stroke survivors and their families and carers. The money raised from the sale of these items goes a long way to helping us fund our operations. A range of services to help your loved one on the road to recovery. Headway Natal offers several unique services for the survivors of an acquired brain injury. Our first aim to to provide respite care which is beneficial to both the survivor and the family. Then, after a series of assessments, we offer rehabilitation in the form of four disciplines: Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Psychology and Physiotherapy. We also offer a host of support groups that help survivors during their rehabilitation.
